The Dictionary of Lost Words - Pip Williams

Tue, December 7th •
Join us to discuss the Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. Here is the description: In 1901, the word ‘Bondmaid’ was discovered missing from the Oxford English Dictionary. This is the story of the girl who stole it. Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the ‘Scriptorium’, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word ‘bondmaid’ flutters to the floor. Esme rescues the slip and stashes it in an old wooden case that belongs to her friend, Lizzie, a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world. Over time, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others, and that words and meanings relating to women’s experiences often go unrecorded. While she dedicates her life to the Oxford English Dictionary, secretly, she begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words. Set when the women’s suffrage movement was at its height and the Great War loomed, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. It’s a delightful, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words, and the power of language to shape the world and our experience of it

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Thu, December 16th •
To end the year, we're going back to our childhood fears and reading Neil Gaiman's Coraline. From Amazon: "In Coraline's family's new flat are twenty-one windows and fourteen doors. Thirteen of the doors open and close. The fourteenth is locked, and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another house just like her own. Only it's different... At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter around the bedroom. But there's another mother, and another father, and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go. Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to fight with all her wits if she is to save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself." The Zoom link will posted the day of the meeting.

Some goals might include (but definitely are not limited to): - learning about a Dart/Flutter/Firebase related topic - collaborating on a shared Dart/Flutter/Firebase project At the start of the event we'll talk about the topics and/or projects that people are interested in and make a plan for everyone getting the most out of the session. I'll be available for the 2 hours of the event - feel free to join at any time and stay for any part of that, but if you're going to join later please post a quick message on the event page so I'll know to make sure the Meet is still running. GoRuck "Basic Challenge" (Philly)

Sat, December 18th • Philadelphia, USA
GORUCK is a company founded in 2008 by Jason McCarthy, a former Green Beret, that specializes in making rucksacks and other outdoor gear. The company also organizes team-building events, known as "GORUCK challenges", that are similar to obstacle racing and military exercises, as well as various courses that teach skills such as tactical shooting, hand-to-hand combat, urban survival, and trauma-centric first aid. The GoRuck "Basic Challenge" and "Tough Challenge" events are coming to Philly in mid December, both of which are intended to honor the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks on Dec. 7th, 1941. The "Basic Challenge" (formerly known as the "Light" challenge) starts at 2:00pm on Saturday, Dec. 18th and lasts 5-6 Hours, covering 7-10 miles with a weighted rucksack. The weight you have to carry in your rucksack depends on your bodyweight - if you weigh over 150 lbs, you'll carry 30 lbs., and if you weigh less than 150 lbs, you'll carry 20 lbs. Your team will typically have to carry some sort of additional weight (often a log) for part of the ruck. There's also some bootcamp-style PT - i.e. "Physical Training" exercises like pushups, lunges, flutter kicks, squat thrusts and bear crawls as well. Considering you'll be doing some of those exercises with your pack on, using a ruckplate that won't move around much is strongly advised. The "Tough Challenge" is the longer event, covering 15-20 miles with a weighted rucksack over 10-12 hours. The event starts at 9:00pm on the night of Friday, Dec. 17th and goes until early Saturday morning. The weight requirement for your rucksack is the same as the Basic Challenge (i.e. 20 lbs if you're under 150, 30 lbs if you're over 150). This event also incorporates some bootcamp-style PT exercises like they do in the Basic challenge but more reps, and your team will typically have to carry some sort of additional weight (often a log) for part of the ruck. With both Basic and Tough events, YOU WILL TYPICALLY HAVE TO GET WET AT SOME POINT, and in the winter that can be quite a shock to the system. (You may want to prepare for this part by taking cold showers.) You'll definitely want to bring clothing and gear that repels water and dries out quickly. Check out these 2 blog entries for tips: https://ruck.beer/gear-review-for-cold-wet-goruck-events/ https://www.ruckstrong.com/post/winter-gear-recommendations-for-goruck-events-2020-2021-edition My assumption is that most of our group members will just be interested in the "Basic Challenge" - that's what I plan to do, but if you're in great shape and want to really test yourself, you can do the "Tough Challenge" which is more physically demanding. WHAT TO BRING: - A rucksack aka backpack (GoRuck's "Rucker" recommended) - Ruck Plate = per weight requirement (20 or 30 lb) - Hydration Bladder: GoRuck's "Source 3L" recommended - Nalgene bottle (1L) or equivalent (electrolytes recommended) - Oral Rehydration Salts (or comparable) - Headlamp with extra batteries - Reflective Ruck Bands (or equivalent) on your ruck - First Aid Kit (small) - Face Mask (Optional) - Gloves (1 pair) Not medical gloves, working gloves - Hand Sanitizer/Wipes - 1 bottle Purell, 1 package of baby wipes (or equivalent) - Windbreaker (only if the temperature is expected below 60 ℉) - Photo ID and $20 cash (just in case) - As a class, you need one (1) 25 lb. class weight and one American Flag. Use your event’s Facebook page to meet your class, organize training, and coordinate team weight details. - Flip-flops and fresh clothing for after the event (not required) For more details on the "Basic Challenge" and to purchase tickets ($67), go to: https://registration.goruck.com/event/basic-philadelphia-pa-80th-anniversary-12182021-1400-16942 For more details on the "Tough Challenge" and to purchase tickets ($135), go to: https://registration.goruck.com/event/tough-challenge-philadelphia-pa-80th-anniversary-12172021-2100-16941 ........................................................

Current book list (NOT AN EVENT)

Sat, January 1st • London, United Kingdom
The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams - 400 pages Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme's place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip, and when she learns that the word means "slave girl," she begins to collect other words that have been discarded or neglected by the dictionary men. As she grows up, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women's and common folks' experiences often go unrecorded. And so she begins in earnest to search out words for her own dictionary: the Dictionary of Lost Words. To do so she must leave the sheltered world of the university and venture out to meet the people whose words will fill those pages. Nemesis by Philip Roth - 304 pages Decent, athletic twenty-three year old playground director Bucky Cantor is devoted to his charges and ashamed with himself because his weak eyes have excluded him from serving in the war alongside his contemporaries. As polio begins to ravage Bucky's playground - child by helpless child - Roth leads us through every emotion such a pestilence can breed: the fear, the panic, the anger, the bewilderment, the suffering and the pain. Vernon Subutex 1 by Virginie Despentes - 352 pages Vernon Subutex was once the proprietor of Revolver, an infamous music shop in Bastille. His legend spread throughout Paris. But by the 2000s his shop is struggling. With his savings gone, his unemployment benefit cut, and the friend who had been covering his rent suddenly dead, Vernon Subutex finds himself down and out on the Paris streets. He has one final card up his sleeve. Even as he holds out his hand to beg for the first time, a throwaway comment he once made on Facebook is taking the internet by storm. Vernon does not realise this, but the word is out: Vernon Subutex has in his possession the last filmed recordings of Alex Bleach, the famous musician and Vernon's benefactor, who has only just died of a drug overdose. A crowd of people from record producers to online trolls and porn stars are now on Vernon's trail. Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell - 384 pages On a summer's day in 1596, a young girl in Stratford-upon-Avon takes to her bed with a fever. Her twin brother, Hamnet, searches everywhere for help. Why is nobody at home? Their mother, Agnes, is over a mile away, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London. Neither parent knows that one of the children will not survive the week. Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith - 480 pages In a country ruled by fear, no one is innocent. Stalin's Soviet Union is an official paradise, where citizens live free from crime and fear only one thing: the all-powerful state. Defending this system is idealistic security officer Leo Demidov, a war hero who believes in the iron fist of the law. But when a murderer starts to kill at will and Leo dares to investigate, the State's obedient servant finds himself demoted and exiled. Now, with only his wife at his side, Leo must fight to uncover shocking truths about a killer-and a country where crime doesn't exist.
